AirPods are wireless earbuds from apple that connects to other devices using Bluetooth functionality. They are compatible with all devices that support Bluetooth functionality, but the way it pairs with these devices differs based on the device type.

If airpods are already connected with iPhone
If you have already connected your airpods with your iPhone, then connecting them to a mac is very easy. Mac will automatically detect the airpods, all you have to do is just select the AirPod from the device list. Follow the 3 steps below.
Step 1: With the AirPods inside the case, open your iPad case.
Step 2: Click the volume/speaker icon in the menu bar that is present at the top of your desktop screen
Step 3: Under the category “Output Device” select AirPods.
If the above-mentioned method doesn’t work, then it is better to make sure that both the mac and iPhone are using the same apple id. Follow the steps below if the above method doesn’t work.
Step 1: Click the system preferences icon present at the bottom of the screen in the taskbar
Step 2: You have to log in to the same Apple ID that you have used to connect with your iPhones
Step 3: To make sure if your apple id is the one you have used on your iPhone. Click on the apple id icon at the right end, and check whether the name of your iPhone is displayed at the bottom left.
Step 4: Turn off the hands-off feature.
Step 5: In the system preferences menu, click general (probably the first icon) and make sure the checkbox that states “Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices” is checked.
If your volume icon is not present in the menu bar, then
- Click on system preferences
- Click the sound icon
- Check the checkbox that states, “Show volume in menu bar”
If airpods are not connected with iPhone
In case you haven’t already connected your AirPods to any other devices or not in iPhone/ipad. Then follow these steps to connect your AirPods with your mac.
Step 1: Open your AirPods case with AirPods inside it.
Step 2: You will find a button at the back of the AirPods case
Step 3: Press and hold it until you see a white light (status indicator) inside the case.
[ The 1st generation AirPod’s case has its status light indicator present inside the case. Whereas the 2nd generation and AirPod pro have the status indicator light in front of the case ]
Step 4: Now open system preferences, and click the Bluetooth icon.
Step 5: Under the devices column, you will find airpods
Step 6: Double click to connect your airpods.
Unable to connect airpods to mac
If you face any connection issues, then disconnect and try to re-connect them. If nothing seems to work then reset your airpods.
How to reset your Airpods
- Press and hold the control button present at the back of your AirPods case for at least 15 seconds.
- The status indicator (present inside or in front) of the airpods will flash an amber color.
- Now repeat the above-mentioned procedure again.
